Resident. Usually occurs sparingly, sometimes fairly commonly at mv light near deciduous woodland and on heathy commons; always rare along treeless parts of the coast. Only patchily distributed, and local in numbers. Probably in decline. Double-brooded, flying mainly from late April to mid June and again from mid July to late August. However, adults have been seen in every week from the second week of April to late September. Larvae feed on birch and less frequently, on alder. (Pratt, 2011)
