Identification
difficulty
: 2Species where care is needed for identification. Should not present any difficulty for experienced recorders, but inexperienced recorders may be expected to provide additional evidence in the form of photographs of reasonable quality that show as many of the identification features as possible or, alternatively, a specimen. Even experienced recorders may be expected to provide additional evidence if the record is outside of the normal flight period or geographical range of the species.

Resident. Adults are generally only occasionally noticed in the wild, but experiments with netted tree-trunks prove that they are common and sometimes perhaps even very common in its leading localities. Well distributed between Bexhill and Findon, and at Chichester and on Ashdown Forest, but apparently less so elsewhere. Single-brooded, flying mainly from late June to the third week of July. Larvae feed almost exclusively on the wood inside mature willows, including osier, but they have been discovered on sallow and poplar. (Pratt, 2011).
