A resident species. Larval mines usually occur sparingly or fairly commonly in almost every habitat, but they are sometimes common in both vice-counties. Probably generally distributed. Triple brooded, flying mainly in April and May, sometimes in March, in July and August, and again in October. Larvae feed in the leaves of wild strawberry, agrimony, bramble, dewberry, water avens, and wood avens.
The latest authoritative work lists the forms nitens and gei as synonymous with Stigmella aurella.(Pratt, 2011)
