The earliest record of the species was made at Brighton in the mid 19th century. During this era the moth was thought to be rare along this section of the coast but by 1905 was considered "Abundant on the shingles" at Brighton (almost certainly Shoreham Beach). The only early eastern colony was situated on Eastbourne's Crumbles and was still listed there in 1931. The species was single-brooded here, flying from July to September, and larvae fed on sea-campion. Undetected in Sussex for over 75 years (Pratt, 2011).
